Uh-oh, it looks like the Colorado Independent is having some financial difficulties as rumor has it that veteran reporter, Mike Littwin, and teachers union hack, Marianne Goodland, are out of jobs. Littwin is a good reporter who writes about bad ideas really well. Littwin has had a 40-plus year career in journalism. Littwin served as a revered/reviled columnist at the Rocky Mountain News until it shuttered its doors in 2009. He also was a columnist at the Denver Post until he was laid off in 2012 as the newspaper also experienced financial difficulties.
While we seldom agree with Littwin on issues, we admire his writing style and wish him well.
Goodland, on the other hand, has blocked us on Twitter, possibly for repeatedly calling her a union hack (even though it’s true). Perhaps she’ll end up at Chalkbeat, if the education publication has a spot for her.
We are unsure of any further layoffs, but this really speaks to the weakness within the Democratic Party. Yes, the Colorado Independent claims to be, um, Independent, but it’s really a more in-depth companion to ColoradoPols, especially Goodland’s coverage of education. Without a cohesive message, it’s awfully difficult to fully leverage a left-leaning media outlet, so it makes sense that donors aren’t seeing a great return-on-investment with the Indy.
Why throw good money after bad?
CORRECTION: Mike Littwin told us that he is still working at the Colorado Independent. No word from Marianne Goodland.
