A new poll puts Republican challenger Gabe Evans neck and neck with freshman Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo at 44% — yet gives Evans the slightest nudge to the front by two tenths of a point.

It’s certainly not good news for the incumbent Democrat that after nearly two years on the job and only a month to go before Election Day, the state’s new 8th District is still a toss-up.

State Rep. Evans has a favorability of 49% compared to Caraveo’s 40%, says Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, which conducted the survey for KDVR/KWGN and The Hill.

The Hispanic vote is also split between the two Hispanic candidates.

So what gives?

The breakdown of what voters consider the top issues in this year’s election is the clue — it’s the economy, stupid.

From KDVR:

The economy is the top issue for 28% of voters in the 8th District, the poll found. That’s followed by housing affordability (21%), immigration (21%), threats to democracy (9%), crime (7%) and abortion access (3%).

Evans seems very pleased with the way folks are planning to vote.

Caraveo hasn’t acknowledged the new poll on her social media. Probably too busy raising more money.
