Democrat Yadira Caraveo is using campaign donations to pay herself a salary to run for Congress in Colorado’s new 8th congressional district.
Completely oblivious to the concept of public service, Caravero has cut 12 paychecks to herself over the last five months totaling more than $44,300.
It’s legal but that doesn’t make it right, and few candidates take advantage of the paycheck loophole to pocket the money from donors instead of using it to get elected.
Complete Colorado reports:
The salary must not exceed the lesser of the minimum annual salary for the federal office sought or the earned income that candidate received during the year prior to becoming a candidate.
Caraveo claims to have retired from medical practice after getting elected to the state legislature, and made about $41,500 as a lawmaker. If elected to Congress, she would make $174,000.
A spokesman for Republican candidate Barbara Kirkmeyer’s campaign said using campaign donations for a personal salary shows Caraveo has lost touch with her constituents.
“At a time when Coloradans are struggling to make ends meet due to Joe Biden’s inflation, Yadira Caraveo is looking out for herself,” said Alan Philp. “She’s not making any personal sacrifice. It makes you wonder who she would look out for in Congress.”
We’re not wondering. It shows exactly who Caraveo is looking out for, herself.
