Coloradans will have to wait until next month to officially pop the cork and celebrate denying Democrats yet another supermajority control of the State House.
That’s because the Weld County recount for the close race between Republican leader Dan Woog over Democrat incumbent Jillaire McMillan won’t even start until the first week of December.
Woog is leading by 123 votes.
Meanwhile, the most watched recount will be in the Colorado Springs area where seven votes divide Republican challenger Rebecca Keltie from her lead over Democrat incumbent Steph Vigil.
Vigil is already playing up the victim card, pledging to abide by the recount as she bitterly opines about losing.
Colorado Politics reports:
She appeared to acknowledge that she might not come out ahead, stating she ran “a positive, people-centered campaign, and even if we ultimately fall a few votes short, we did it battling an onslaught of dark money attacks, and opposition that relied on conspiracy theories, fear, and division…Constituents in HD-16 who are frustrated and disappointed should know that I am not going anywhere. I will be active in our community in every meaningful way that I can, and will continue to be accessible to you for collaboration and partnership.”
If that’s her idea of being “positive,” no wonder she’s losing.
These two GOP wins plus others this election will whittle House Democrats down to 43 seats while Senate Democrats lost their supermajority bid while holding onto 23 seats, robbing them of their dreams to exert veto control over the governor.
Oh, happy days.
These are the most significant Republican gains since Democrats swept the state elections in the dark times of 2020.
Republicans still have a lot of ground to make up to reclaim some sense of sanity in the state legislature.
A complete rehaul of state party leadership would go a long way in achieving a significant rebalancing of the Californication that’s creeped into our state.
But 2024 is certainly shaping up to be a good start.
Sleep well conservative friends, and tug that blanket just a little more to the right side of your bed tonight.
