Good news from the New York Times, the very existence of the EPA is at stake because of the environmental disasters the agency caused in Colorado and Michigan, failing budgets, and attacks from key politicians.
Well, Democratic politicians.
It didn’t matter when Republicans were screaming from the rafters about the obscene failures from a fiefdom filled with power-hungry bureaucrats more concerned about living large off taxpayer dollars than actually cleaning up the environment.
The agency has long been a favorite political target for Republicans, who criticize its authority to regulate large areas of the American economy as it enacts rules to curb pollution. But the E.P.A.’s challenges in 2016 are multifaceted. The Democratic presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, have questioned the agency’s handling of the drinking water crisis in Flint, Mich. And a toxic wastewater spill in a Colorado river last year brought charges of incompetence from both parties.
Now that Democrats are criticizing the agency, making noises Gov. Hickenlooper and U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet failed to do adequately when it happened in our backyard, the New York Times is finally paying attention to the EPA’s massive failures.
Democratic candidates are not exactly rushing to the agency’s defense. Mrs. Clinton said that as president she would open an investigation into its handling of the Flint water crisis. Mr. Sanders said that he would “fire anybody who knew about what was happening and did not act appropriately.”
We seriously doubt Clinton or Sanders would carry out their threats if elected. It will be up to Republicans to carry out any action against the agency’s very existence, we’re just glad to see it’s on the table for elimination.
