U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert will square off against Democrat candidate Trisha Calvarese on Sept. 3 in perhaps the only debate between the feisty congressional candidates running to represent the 4th District.
Topics will mostly focus on key issues affecting the economy, as the lunchtime event is hosted by the Douglas County Economic Development Corporation.
We expect the candidates will be quizzed on whether they support Kamala Harris’s federal ban on grocery story price gouging, or as the Washington Post’s editorial board called it, a political gimmick.
Price gouging is when gas stations hike prices on the pumps for a few weeks after a hurricane or other emergencies to gouge the customer.
The cost of food, fuel, clothing, and housing has been inflated since COVID because the government shut down businesses and then tried to spend its way out of inflation.
Calvarese told Colorado Politics:
“Hard-working families and small businesses in Colorado are struggling to keep up with soaring costs of food and care. Everywhere I go, people share their housing challenges. Every generation in the workforce is worried about jobs,” Calvarese said.
So please, ask her about that.
Calvarese is a political operative with socialist creds who got her start as an intern for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
Not only does she come pre-programmed for Beltway politics, she’s a second generation federal bureaucrat who only came home to run for office so she could move back to Washington, D.C.
The event is also sponsored by Colorado Politics and the Denver Gazette, with Ernest Luning moderating.
Will there be a live stream or recording of the event online afterwards?
We sure hope so.
As Republicans who have seen videos of Calvarese knows, watching Boebert tear into her will be appointment viewing.
We anticipate that Calvarese — who is part chipmunk and part Valley Girl — will hold her own against Boebert.
We just don’t expect the business community will be impressed.
The debate will be held at The Club at Ravenna in Littleton beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 3.
