This story would be hilarious if it wasn’t true and didn’t negatively impact already-cash strapped schools, but it is Boulder, so it’s a little funny. Apparently, the Boulder Valley School District gave $850,000 of bond construction money to someone posing as a construction contractor. Once the district had recovered about half of the funds, the suspect fled to Nigeria.

Fortunately, the district has recovered all except $172,000 of the funds.

Superintendent Bruce Messinger was fired earlier this year for undisclosed reasons (maybe because one of his people sent nearly $1 million to a Nigerian with a spoofed email address?).

While we’re glad most of the money was recovered, damn Boulder Valley, even our grandma doesn’t fall for fishing scams anymore. Just goes to show you that Boulder really is living in an alternate universe.
