The Douglas County teachers’ union may not have bargaining power, but they proved Thursday they can flex their muscles and control the education of our children by effectively shuttering schools through a sick-out.
Why?
According to their own words from a zoom meeting with union organizers, it was to gain back their power.
The new conservative majority elected in November wants to push out the school superintendent, who’s essentially a union stooge, and the union is throwing our children’s’ education under the bus in order to keep their power.
Watch this.
One teacher who spoke up with her concerns that if she called in sick her kids would get even further behind. They are already “super behind” because of the years lost to COVID, she said.
But they are assured that if enough teachers call in sick, they can force the entire school district to close and children will be “equally” deprived of their education.
“The kids will get another snow day. You know, everyone’s going to be equally behind,” said Kathy Dorman, vice president of Douglas County Federation Local 2765.
“We are trying to gain power back, aren’t we?” Dorman reminded.
So there you have it. Douglas County kids lose out on their education, but the teachers’ union wins because they are showing their power by persuading hundreds of teachers to call in sick, forcing schools to close and parents to make alternative plans for their kids that day with little notice.
And so what if the kids fall even further behind in their studies? So long as they fail, equally.
Whatever you make of the Douglas County school wars, today’s “sick-out” of over 1,500 teachers puts to rest the notion that “it’s about the kids”
Conduct battles on your own time. Don’t use school children as pawns and don’t deprive them of learning days.
That is all.
