We noted back in December the creation of a new issue committee seeking to ban conceal carry on Colorado college campuses. But compared to how much attention the high profile fracking bans are receiving, this damaging ballot measure appears to be largely flying under the radar.
The Daily Camera reports that anti-gun organizers have “collected half the signatures needed for a November ballot measure asking voters to ban concealed weapons on public college and university campuses in Colorado.” Petitioners must turn in 86,105 valid signatures by June 30 to qualify for the ballot. To be safe, they should collect closer to 120,000 signatures to accommodate for those that are disqualified.
You’ve got to hand it to these anti-gun fanatics – they do not give up easily. After the Colorado Supreme Court struck down a concealed carry ban on CU campuses in 2012, Democrat legislators also failed to implement a statewide ban on college campuses last year. Perhaps striking out for a third time will finally hammer the message home: Coloradans believe in the 2nd Amendment.
The 2nd Amendment isn’t a partisan issue either, which is why we imagine that this proposed measure is quietly giving Gov. John Hickenlooper and Sen. Mark Udall heartburn. The last thing they need in a year that is trending Republican is a gun measure on the ballot. While we oppose banning conceal carry on campus, we can’t help but enjoy the thought of watching Hick and Udall squirm on the issue.
