State Rep. Andy Kerr describes himself as a “teacher” and an “educator.” As OGI has discovered, however, his days of spending any sort of meaningful time in a classroom are merely a distant memory.
During the last few school years, he served as a ”teacher on special assignment,” through which he got perks unavailable to most teachers. Then, just last month coinciding with the start of the new school year, he became a “full time” employee serving as an “online teacher.” Through this new gig, he gets to work from home with no oversight and using his own computer.
While most teachers must work a standard Monday-Friday work week from a classroom, Kerr is allowed to spread his 40-hour obligation out over all seven days of each week, with an additional flexibility to respond to student or parent questions pretty much any time it’s convenient for him, with a only a presumed timeframe for such communications of between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. each day.
As Jefferson Couunty Public Schools asks voters to support a mass taxpayer cash infusion into district coffers, it not only refuses to disclose public records about Kerr’s current and past job performance and responsibilities, but also similar information about several other politically engaged and controversial employees.
