Colorado House Minority Leader Hugh McKean of Loveland died Sunday of a heart attack. He was 55.
McKean reportedly felt sore and tired on Saturday, but said it was likely due to his job and working on his new house.
McKean had been at a campaign rally for Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Joe O’Dea on Saturday. O’Dea said Sunday that McKean’s “boundless optimism, kindness and empathy were on full display” at that rally, and he offered his prayers to McKean’s family.
The popular Republican leader was respected for his devotion to public service and compassion for those he served. He was a sincere man, but also quick with a joke and he had a knack for bringing people together.
The McKean Family and @CoHouseGOP want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love & support following the unexpected passing of Leader Hugh McKean. Funeral services are being planned and details will be made public once finalized by the family. #CoPolitics #coleg pic.twitter.com/gY8P9kMzwe

McKean entered politics in 2009 when he was elected to the Loveland City Council.
He served as the state representative for District 51 since 2016 and was elected by his Republican colleagues to serve as their House leader in 2020.
McKean was running unopposed in next week’s election.
Condolences and support for his family spread across social media upon news of his death, which came just days after his 55th birthday.
