The governor of California had to go all the way to Maryland to find a suitable LGBTQ+ candidate who checked all the proper progressive boxes to serve out the remainder of Dianne Feinstein’s U.S. Senate term.
Colorado’s U.S. Senators were quick to welcome Laphonza Butler to the halls of Congress, where she made a name for herself as a campaign staffer for the likes of Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, and most recently as president of Emily’s List there in the D.C. area.
Emily’s List, for the uninitiated, is the Democrat Political Action Committee that funds female candidates who support abortion.
Laphonza Butler has been a tireless advocate for working families and women’s rights–and I look forward to working with her to solve the most pressing issues our country faces, from child poverty to reproductive health care.

A press release from Gov. Newsom’s office that included quotes from prominent Black, LGBTQ, and elected leaders, also included Colorado U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper for some reason.
“Laphonza Butler has spent her career fighting for workers, women, and the LGBTQ+ community. I look forward to welcoming her to the Senate where she’ll bring her vast experience and much-needed perspective while she represents the people of California.”
Actually, her career has been that of political activist and union leader. She checks all the progressive boxes!
Well, except that she’s been a resident of Maryland since 2021, according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission and a California Commission. Emily’s List also scrubbed their website of her Maryland residence on the day Butler was announced as the new senator of California.
As the most populated state in the nation, and arguably the most woke region of North America, we’re shocked the governor of California could not find a single California resident as progressively qualified as Butler to represent the people of that state.
We’re kind of insulted Newsom didn’t pick a Colorado resident to represent the sunshine state.
