Republican El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Wayne Williams has filed for a Secretary of State run in 2014, prolific political scribe Lynn Bartels scooped yesterday.
Current Secretary of State Scott Gessler decided to not run for re-election in favor of a gubernatorial campaign.
Williams has made a name for himself in opposing a partisan Democrat elections bill – HB1303 – that has been criticized by editorial boards from The Denver Post to the Colorado Springs Gazette for its sloppiness.
He also shined on election night during the recalls, when his office managed to get regular updates on ballot returns and results out, while Pueblo Clerk Bo Ortiz embarrassed himself with a website that wouldn’t work and an extremely delayed release of results.
Williams is currently the only Republican in the race. Democrats Joe Neguse and Ken Gordon have filed seeking the Democratic nomination.
