In a new story by The Associated Press, the wealth of various Congressional districts are explored.  And, what will come as shock to no one paying close attention, it’s the Democratic Party that represents the wealthy.

[I]n Congress, the wealthiest among us are more likely to be represented by a Democrat than a Republican. Of the 10 richest House districts, only two have Republican congressmen. Democrats claim the top six, sprinkled along the East and West coasts. Most are in overwhelmingly Democratic states like New York and California. [the Peak emphasis]

Not only are the wealthy represented by some of the most liberal democrats (Nancy Pelosi’s district is the 8th wealthiest; Henry Waxman’s is the 2nd), but they are almost among the safest Democratic seats out there.

One of the perpetual myths that the old British aristocracy told themselves to justify their monopoly on power was that the masses were not smart enough to know what was good for themselves; that a benevolent paternalism was needed from the upper-echelon to save those who couldn’t save themselves.  Sound familiar?

Another article this week by Investor’s Business Daily illustrates how eco-activism has become a luxury good:

The dirty little secret of the modern green movement is that it’s become a luxury good for the uber-rich who espouse policies — from carbon taxes to renewable energy standards to closing down coal plants — that impose high costs on poor people who can least afford to pay the green tab.

…A Pew Research Center poll released last… found that only two major voting groups oppose construction of the Keystone XL pipeline: Democrats who make more than $100,000 annually and Democrats with college or advanced degrees.

A wealthy Democrat who opposes Keystone?  No wonder Udall thinks his anti-Keystone position is moderate; it is – for the group he hangs out with!  Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who is looking wiser and wiser by the day, probably best described the current Republican party, “We’re not the party of the rich. We’re the party of the people who want to get rich.”
