Last week, we reported that some Jeffco School Board members received threats against their children. We condemned such actions then, as we have condemned threats against other public figures, such as Rep. Rhonda Fields and Secretary of State Scott Gessler. The Denver Post reported on the incident. Oddly enough, fellow Jeffco School Board member and union apologist, Lesley Dahlkemper, took a different take. Instead of condemning the threats against her fellow board members, this is what she said:
“I think it is reprehensible that any school board members’ child would be threatened. It’s fair game to go after an elected official, but you never threaten a child, ever.”
Fair game to threaten elected officials? We can be rambunctious…occasionally…but even we think it’s wrong to threaten elected officials. Additionally, her words may embolden those who would consider threatening her fellow school board members, which is disappointing.
Of course, she may not have meant to give the green light to would-be harassers. Perhaps, she meant something different. But, that’s what she said. It’s probably frustrating for Dahlkemper to have her motives questioned, but, it happens all the time with the other members of the board. Would you like to clarify your remarks, Ms. Dahlkemper?
