The confirmation hearing for Coloradan David Bernhardt to take the number two spot at the Interior Department as deputy secretary is set for today.

And as Senate tradition dictates, Bernhardt will be introduced by his home senators, Cory Gardner and …

And once again, that other senator from Colorado is missing in action when it comes to supporting the home team.

The home team is Colorado, not Washington, just a reminder for Democratic Senator Michael Bennet.

The Rifle native, as we’ve written before, is wholly qualified for the post. It would be a huge win for the state as well to have a native son looking after our interests.

As an added plus, all of the correct folks are rooting against him — national environmental groups and their minions who wouldn’t be happy even if Mother Earth herself were secretary of the Interior.

All of the usual suspects are lining up to take a shot at Bernhardt today: the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk for Justice and Peace, Ravens Word Writers, Xun Biosphere Project, and 100 or so other special interest groups that include the likes of WildEarth Guardians, and Food and Water Watch.

In a nutshell, they don’t want Bernhardt because he’s a westerner who thinks and acts like a westerner, and Heavens forbid that a westerner be a steward of the West.

The confirmation hearing kicks off at noon Mountain Time. Here’s a link to watch all the action, minus an appearance by Sen. Bennet.

Good luck, Bernhardt.
