The former Democratic committee staffer busted before fleeing the U.S. to his home country of Pakistan this week has pled not guilty to a bank fraud charge and was then turned loose by the court with a GPS monitoring device on his ankle.

Imran Awan, an IT staffer for several members of Congress on the Foreign Affairs Committee and Intelligence Committee, including U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, is also reportedly under investigation for cyber security breaches.

The court might not think he’s a flight risk, but the affidavit provided at the time of his arrest certainly signal it should be a concern.

Awan’s wife left the country in March, with a return date in September, but an FBI agent stated they believed she had no intention of returning.

The FBI agent also stated Awan purchased a flight to Doha, Qatar, and then to Lahore, Pakistan. He purchased a return flight for a date in January 2018.

Meanwhile, it turns out that while Awan was allegedly fired by the committees earlier this year once he came under investigation, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz kept him on the payroll until his arrest earlier this week.

We wonder if any other members of Congress also kept him on the payroll? DeGette has been mum on the whole scandal.

Media reports also allege Awan was stealing equipment from congressional offices and committing serious, potentially illegal, violations on the House IT network.

Meanwhile, the White House has called for a thorough investigation of Awan. Considering the committees he worked for handled the nation’s most sensitive issues and secrets, this is definitely warranted.
