State Treasurer Walker Stapleton came out of the gate strong this weekend in officially announcing his Republican campaign for governor, Colorado Politics reports.

Stapleton pledged to tackle tough issues like PERA, healthcare, education and securing our energy industry, rather than make empty promises that won’t or can’t be kept.

He cited Gov. Hickenlooper’s lack of leadership and took aim at Jared Polis for running on a campaign to kill the energy industry.

“The exact reason I’m running for governor is because we need a governor who can responsibly develop Colorado’s natural resources with the industry, while protecting the environment and recognizing what a vital contribution this industry makes to Colorado’s economic future,” Stapleton said.

Also running for the Republican nomination are Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler, former state Rep. Victor Mitchell, former Parker Mayor Greg Lopez and Doug Robinson. Democrats have Polis, Lt. Gov. Donna Lynne, former state Sen. Mike Johnston, former state Treasurer Cary Kennedy, and Noel Ginsburg.
