U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner said more evidence that Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism appeared in an NBC News report Tuesday that links the former communist nation to a bizarre string of attacks on U.S. embassy personnel in Cuba and China.

The U.S. has said 26 government workers were injured in unexplained attacks at their homes and hotels in Havana starting in late 2016, causing brain injuries, hearing loss and problems with cognition, balance, vision and hearing problems.

The attacks have continued, and also occurred in China.

Intelligence officials believe it’s caused by sophisticated microwaves or another type of electromagnetic weapon.

Gardner has authored a bill requiring the State Department to consider designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. The bill would also set sanctions against Russia.

“Vladimir Putin cannot continue to operate with impunity and it is time we impose tough and lasting consequences for Russia’s actions that undermine civilized norms and international law, including the invasion of Ukraine, the support for the murderous Assad regime in Syria, and assassinations on foreign soil,” Gardner said.

If Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism, then perhaps it’s time we treat them that way.
