If U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet was counting on positioning himself as the education candidate in the crowded field of Democrats vying for the presidential nomination, he’d better count again.

Starting with the money he’s raised, or lack thereof, from Big Education funders.

As he is in the polls averaging less than 1% of support, Bennet’s also running behind the pack in gathering teacher support and union dollars.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (free college!) came in first with $1.2 million, followed by U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (free college!) with $800,000.

Bennet managed to scrape up $200,000 behind them, most likely in dimes and nickels.

If Bennet, a former Denver Public Schools superintendent, was hoping to win a Miss Congeniality spot in the aftermath of the election with an Education Secretary nomination, he’s not going to get there with his promise of free kindergarten.
