Retired Judge Marvin Romanoff, father of Andrew Romanoff who is a candidate in the Democratic Party’s U.S. Senate primary, has died.

He was 80.

Romanoff quietly left the campaign trail a week ago to be with his father. He announced his father’s passing late Sunday.

“My father grew up above a grocery store his parents owned in Schenectady, NY. His mother came to the US from Belarus. His father came from Poland; he died when Dad was only 17. That tragedy—and the economic insecurity that followed—shaped him for the rest of his life,” Romanoff wrote in a tweet.

Romanoff said he was deeply grateful to the nurses who took care of his father, and to the hospice team for providing comfort to the family.

Nearly 200 followers offered their condolences on Twitter, including Romanoff’s opponent in the Tuesday election.

Our condolences go out to the Romanoff family during this extraordinarily painful time.
