Democrats in the state legislature are working a con job on voters by claiming to ease gas taxes to help Coloradans who are having a tough time making ends meet.

In reality, Democrats are just delaying by a few months the tax hikes they already passed and for only two pennies until after Election Day.

Then, the Democrats’ gas taxes will keep going up every year over the next decade.

This bait and switch proposal is led by state Sen. Brittany Pettersen, the Democratic nominee to replace U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter in the 7th Congressional District.

It’s an easy bet the legislation she is sponsoring in the state Senate to delay the tax increase until after Election Day will be featured prominently in her campaign literature disguised as a tax cut.

Also sponsoring the bill are Democrat state Reps. Barbara McLachlan and Dylan Roberts.

Only Democrats could pass a 10-year annual gas tax and claim that delaying it a few months is actually a tax cut.

Jesse Mallory, State Director of Americans for Prosperity-Colorado (AFP), agrees this sham of a bill is a flimsy shield for desperate politicians.

“Lawmakers in Denver who enacted SB21-260 – violating the constitution and betraying their constituents – should own up to their actions. Instead, they’re playing more political games by delaying the unwanted “gas fee” in hopes of tricking voters in November. AFP is committed to upholding transparency in government and will be educating voters on the disingenuous tactics of their elected officials. We will not let these politicians hide from their records.”

Mallory’s organization along with Republican state Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg filed a lawsuit against the state last week charging the gas taxes disguised as fees is a violation of TABOR.

Rolling back the Democrats’ entire gas tax package permanently, that would be a real break for consumers.

But that’s never going to happen under Democrat control.
