Hell froze over this week as the Denver Post editorial board told Democrats to stop protecting Jena Griswold and order an audit of the Secretary of State’s office in the wake of the password online leak scandal.

Yet still, it was the weakest call for transparency and accountability a newspaper could possibly write — about a Democrat.

Editorial writers tried to put their left-wing friends at ease, assuring them performance audits don’t dig up dirt on financial fraud that could be used against Griswold in a political, plus a wink and a nod that it won’t lead to nasty newspaper headlines.

On the cringe scale, the editorial rates a solid 10.

Heaven forbid Democrats take any action that might cost one of their own an election. Or that newspaper writers, whose job it is to be a government watchdog, would do more than just watch.

The Post insisted the audit results would be really boring, and no one would pay attention to all the blah, blah, blah best practices and good government findings; so just go ahead and pull the plug.

That was their excuse for telling state lawmakers to do their damn job, because it won’t hurt one of their own.

This was all the tough love they could muster:

The elections division could clearly use some more scrutiny if two policy violations were found connected to just this one mistake.

Even more concerning than those two policy violations, however, are complaints from county clerks and recorders about the lack of communication from the Secretary of State’s office.

These complaints are not new and do not appear to be politically motivated, but rather stem from some sort of a systemic failure to support our county election officials.

If Griswold was Republican, they’d be screaming for a recall election or prosecution.

Instead, they coddled Democrats for voting on a party line this week in the Legislative Audit Committee to block an audit of the latest clustermuck to come from Griswold’s office.

The Post called it a “knee-jerk desire to shield her from further unfair scrutiny” from right-wing nuts” who falsely criticize her of vast left-wing election fraud conspiracies.

Maybe if Democrats tried practicing some oversight, transparency, and accountability of state government that’s in complete control by Democrats, these conspiracies wouldn’t take hold so easily.
