A plumber from Pueblo who spray painted his own yards signs just beat a billionaire mayor from New York City. No, that’s not a Slate pitch. It’s the results of the recall of State Senator Angela Giron.
Following the concession of Senate President John Morse in his recall election in Colorado Springs, Senator Giron in Pueblo is warming up her vocal cords for her own concession speech.
With 75% reporting, the “Yes” on recall vote was winning 60%-40%. (Update Final: 56%-44% Yes)
Giron’s recall was spearheaded by a plumber from Pueblo named Victor Head. His group Pueblo Freedom and Rights and their 100% volunteer effort succeeded in gathering enough signatures to put the recall on the ballot, with a signature validity rate of 94%.
By comparison, the professional effort to get the billion dollar tax hike on November’s ballot cost over $750,000 and had a 54% validity rate.
Victor’s group had virtually no money — even going so far as to spray paint their own yard signs to save money. They were outspent by the groups backed by billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg by 10 or 20 times.
But, in the end, Bloomberg’s billions weren’t any match for Victor Head’s voters.
It’s not just the rag tag nature of the Giron recall organizers that should shock the world about these results.
These two races are huge losses for Democrats. According to an analysis by the liberal Mother Jones, Obama won Morse’s district by 21% in 2012. He won Giron’s by 19%. That’s a victory for conservatives deep in Democratic territory.
That should shock the political world.
It i was not Democrates versus Republicans , it was wrongs that Colorado citizens corrected.
Citizens of Pueblo and Victor Head's group YOU MADE US REMEMBER WHAT THE PEOPLE WHO SETTLED IN THE WEST and worked their tails off for their families ARE MADE OF. so PROUD!!!!!!
Congratulations to Victor and the voters in SD11 and SD3 on their historic choice. This is hopefully a first step towards restoring the power back to the people and away from the monied interests.
It's because we have so many Texans who moved here–who, though they may say they are a D or R, also say, "Don't Mess with Us!"
This is what happens when politicians don't represent the will of their constituents!
historic
Thank you Victor Head and Congratulations to all of the common sense voters of Pueblo and Colorado Springs.
Victor Head, next time your in Aurora, the beer's on me. Well done Colorado.
Hick interviewed on 9 News back in March:
==========================================================…For all of their fervor, Hickenlooper sees the demonstrators a small minority.
"Not only do they not represent the middle, I don't think they represent the Republican party. I don't think they represent a large number of people," Gov. Hickenlooper said.

Hey Hickgungrabber,
I know that back in March with Biden, Obama and Bloomberg blowing in your ear and pulling your strings, you may not have heard our rage through the din of the honking horns and our protests on the Capitol grounds. We're law abiding gun owners and we're the 99.999999% that get up every morning, do our jobs and pay our taxes and abide by the law. We're the good guys you and your party decided to vilify.
You had the right instinct after the Aurora shooting when you stated that no new gun laws would have stopped it. I don't know what Bloomberg and party leaders promised you, but I have a message for you that was delivered tonight with a big, fat exclamation point: We're mad as hell and we're not going to take this attack on our constitutional rights lying down. Your reelection is not a sure thing. In fact, thanks to your arrogance and aloofness on display in the 9 News link above, it's not even a *likely* thing.
Too bad. You could have been a statesman – a voice of reason working to bring us together to mutually find an agreeable solution. Instead, you played partisan politics and together with your party hacks in the legislature, you mugged and then belittled Colorado's law abiding gun owners.
Do you hear our horns honking tonight?
Yes!!!!
Let this be a "teachable moment" for any other politician who tries to infringe upon our Constitutionally-guaranteed liberties.
Hickenlooper is most definitely next!
19000 is a LOT. I am so happy tonight but maybe we take the victories we have and prepare for the a much bigger night on 4 Nov 2014. Anti gun, far left liberal Dems are very much contained now. Let's focus on getting rid of a number of bad legislatures and of course, Teflon Hick.
Time to restoke the grass roots machine and go after Evie Hudak again. This time with enough paid volunteers to cover her district. We need to get 19,000 valid signatures and then she's going down.
Si o NRA
Congratulation Colorado. Rights are not Negotiable.
YAYyyyyyyy! Some faith being restored in CO! Thank you voters and Recall Election organizers!! You ROCK!!
This victory is both a signal to the Left that they cannot cow or subvert us with money and slick ads; it is a symbol of the determination of people of common sense and virtue to break free of the grip of the Left.
Effort can overcome money. Hickenlooper is the next to go.
