In a poll released by Rasmussen today, Governor John Hickenlooper leads all GOP opponents, but Coloradans make it clear they’re looking for an alternative.
Of the three GOP candidates polled against Hickenlooper (Bob Beauprez’s announcement into the race happened too recently to be included), Secretary of State Scott Gesseler is closest 38% to 44%. While former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, and state Sen. Greg Brophy are both nine points back at 37% to 46% and 33% to 42%, respectively.
As the name recognition of the GOP candidate goes up, people willing to vote for Hickenlooper goes down. Colorado is shopping, and if they find a candidate they like, Hick is gone.
What should be most disconcerting for Hickenlooper is that even against a well-known, seen-to-be polarizing figure like Tancredo, Hick still can’t get higher than 46% of the vote. In other words, Hick is hitting his head against a 46% ceiling.
Yet, with low name ID candidates like Gessler and Brophy (72% and 61%, respectively), Hick’s reelect numbers drop as low as 42.
This places the ball squarely in the GOP’s court. The opening is there to put forth a dynamic candidate that can show Colorado he’s ready to lead. Much like Udall, Colorado shows it’s not in love with the job Hickenlooper has done; it is now time for Republicans to show them a better alternative.
Go ahead, waste your vote!!
Come on CO, we can't afford any more of this Bloomberg puppet.
He's given his endorsement for BS 93 which gives the oil/gas and related pipeline companies eminent domain over land and water. He's supposed to be a farmer from Wray? What type of farmer/rancher – or any individual property owner – wants to give a a globally developed and funded private interest commodity eminent domain powers over our land and water? In that light, he's no different than our unconstitutional Democratic Governor suing a Constitutionally protected Home Rule Municipality with an unconstitutional statute.
Coloradans may be looking for an alternative but the Republicans DON"T have one.
Any Governor that sues a Constitutionally protected home rule municipality isn't worth the ink. The Republicans and Democrats have lost their moral compass. Look at the bipartisan support for SB 93, giving oil/gas and toxic sludge transport companies – private interest commodities – public utility status. The industry can take your land and water rights, thanks to the Democrats with a Governor ready to enforce their unconstitutional laws. First guns, now land and water. Sickening.
polls are just rhetoric. me and a lot in my circle of friends and family are voting for Greg Brophy.
If a viable constitution party or Libertarian runs and has a solid platform I'm all for he/she. However never in my 40 plus yrs on this planet have I ever seen such a candidate emerge and get the backing both public and financial to make it feasible. The closest anyone ever came in my life was ross perot for president in the 1990's and he at best got 25% of the nation. He just did NOT convey his message properly to the public!!
Scotty is toast.

Teresa Eckelman – two presidents have been Independent of any political party. George Washington, and John Tyler. There have been 4 that were Democratic-Republican, 4 that were Whigs, 1 that was a National Republican, two National Union party members, and 1 Federalist.
If you're opposed to socialism, then why are you voting republican? Romney was in favor of socialism at a slightly smaller scale than Obama. He favored socialized medicine as well, and implemented the same in Mass.
Kevin – Cite your source for who voted for what. Unless you have full access to the ballots you cannot possibly know who voted for what in the general elections. Perhaps you meant how many republican US senators instead of republicans? It seems to me that CO doesn't have any republican senators in DC since Wayne Allard retired in 2009?
Teresa, I am assuming you are disagreeing with Bart?
Disagree entirely. How many independent party candidates did you have as sitting president? Seriously. I am a republican. Not that I agree with their jellyfish backbone, but because that is the party that most resembles my beliefs. It's time to give the party with moral character a boost. Screw the democrat/socialist/fascist/communist party.
Really? How many Republicans voted for these gun laws in Colorado? NONE. How many voted for Obamacare? NONE.
Kevin Zepp Republicans are nothing more than light versions of the democrats. Neither party cares about the Constitution any more. I cannot in good conscience ever vote for a democrat or a republican ever again. They are out of touch with the real world the rest of us live in, and have no sense of responsibility for their actions. All they care about is whether they won the latest election or not.
Jim MIller – Seriously? This is the way you treat someone with a different opinion than yourself? You must be a democrat.
Bart Denison It's splitting the vote. Anytime you add the Libertarian's in the mix or some sore loser Republican who lost in the primaries you are taking votes away from the Republican candidate and giving them to Hickenlooper. That's why we have all these infringing gun laws. A Repubilican would have never signed them. How many Libertarians hold office in Colorado? NONE. How many Libertarians hold office in the US Senate? NONE. How many Consitution Party canidates hold any of those offices? NONE. Get the point. When those parties want a piece of the vote, they get it, but then there should be no complaint when the Democrats railroad in gun laws.
My point is that these Libertarian canidates and CP's should run as Repubilicans.
Bart Denison Bring in the unicorns!
I don't see it as splitting the vote. There is no reason why there has to be only two parties – in fact, it would be better to do away with political parties entirely. Only when we wake up and recognize that there is no difference between democrat and republican will conservatives have a voice again.
Splitting the vote is what got us Hick to begin with. We had the Repub-Maes. Scandal made it apparent that he was not going to win. Tancredo came to rescue and neither of the two would drop the race.
Why assume that the GOP is the only competition? Perhaps it's time to look for other political parties entirely – the Constitution Party perhaps, or maybe Libertarian?
Great poll, but was this statewide or just in the Denver (Democratic area) limits?
