An ongoing poll over the past few years measures the top concerns of Coloradans, and it turns out it’s not abortion.

Democrats will be surprised to learn that it’s the same concerns Republicans have been tending to for the last century — the contents on their wallet, paying for necessities, and keeping a roof over their heads.

The nonprofit Colorado Health Foundation has been conducting an annual poll of Colorado’s top concerns for the past three years to help inform policymakers about what is top of mind for likely voters in the state. This year, Coloradans are more concerned about household finances than anything else.

Eighty-six percent of Coloradans say the state’s cost of housing is an extremely serious or very serious problem, including 61% who say it’s an extremely serious problem. Another 84% say the general cost of living is an extremely or very serious problem, including 61% who say it’s extremely serious.

Interestingly, the poll presented respondents with a myriad of solutions to solve their problems, all having to do with government.

Obviously, the poll was not conducted by a conservative group.

A majority of Coloradans actually think they could afford to pay their rent if everyone making $500,000 had to pay more taxes. They also think government should require employers to give them raises. Homebuilders should be forced to build cheap housing, and a majority thinks more regulations on food, health care and utilities would be a big help.

No where In the survey were respondents asked what they could do on their own to improve their circumstances, like earning a raise, working harder to advance their careers, or furthering their education to get ahead in life.
