The so-called “assault weapons” ban was killed just after midnight Thursday following a full day of testimony by more than 500 witnesses — most of whom opposed disarming law-abiding citizens.

It’s a good day to be an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, said America.

The bill would have made it illegal to own or sell commonly owned firearms, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly testified before the House Judiciary Committee.

“We must not compromise individual liberties under the guise of safety,” Weekly said.

The ill-conceived bill was sponsored by Denver Democrat Rep. Elisabeth Epps, who is clueless about firearms or what makes one an assault weapon.

Gun store owners testified her measure would turn law-abiding citizens into criminals.

After a marathon session of testimony, three Democrats sided with Republicans to kill the bill in a 7-6 vote.

Epps is the same lawmaker who was the lone vote against a bill on human trafficking prevention training for public safety employees, and voted against increased penalties for killing police dogs in the execution of a crime.

Her bill was such a constitutional mess, even Gov. Polis opposed it.
